It is now just over 7 months since my arrest. The time is going very fast. No doubt many of you will be gearing up for your Christmas and New Year celebrations. Please know my thoughts are with you all.
In this month’s update, I thought I would write about the Spanish lessons I have. Here in Argentina the language is called Castellano (where there are two L’s together, they are pronounced like sh). I have two lessons a week although I am often late for my Friday class as I go to aerobics first. Our teacher is a professor of English therefore, she speaks English very well. I enjoy her classes as she has structure and most of what she is teaching us is very relevant for life in here and assists us in being able to communicate better with the guards. Recently our teacher asked if some of us would do an oral presentation to the Director and some of the other senior staff of the Prison. We had to write a few paragraphs about ourselves, our whānau/family and what our favourite colour, number and foods were. I volunteered as I thought I needed the practice of actually speaking the language. One of the advantages for me is that the Spanish vowels are pronounced the same as Māori vowels, although my tongue struggles still with some of the sequence of the letters. Here is a copy of my kōrero/speech that was in a letter form to my Professor:-
