The following media statement was released on Saturday, 24 March 2012:
Sharon Armstrong to appeal against Argentinean Court Decision
Sharon Armstrong’s family confirmed today that she will be appealing against the Argentinean Courts recent verdict of guilty.
Since receiving the decision the family have taken some private time to deal with the outcome and decide whether to proceed with an appeal.
Following consultation with their Argentinean legal team which confirmed their belief that the decision should be appealed they have decided to fund an appeal against conviction.
Sharon was sentenced to 4 years 10 months this sentence will have time served taken into consideration plus will be subject to the Argentinean parole legislation. She will be eligible for parole late in 2013. The family are resolute in their belief that Sharon is not guilty, they accept she made a foolish error in agreeing to carry the suitcase which was later found to have cocaine concealed inside but they know that she would not become involved in any form of criminal drug activity and was not aware of the
contents of the case.
The family would also like to thank all those who have assisted and supported them during this difficult time.
